Luxury travel advisor in New Orleans, planned by a physician who flies out of MSY too.

Short answer

Tranquil Explorations is a luxury travel advisory based in Metairie, Louisiana, founded by Falguni Patel, MD, a hospitalist physician and luxury travel advisor affiliated with Fora Travel. She plans slow, thoughtful luxury travel for busy professionals and midlife travelers in the New Orleans area, with every itinerary routed around Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY). A local advisor who knows what flying from New Orleans takes

I've lived in the New Orleans area for more than twenty years. I plan trips for travelers across New Orleans, Metairie, Kenner, Uptown and the Garden District, and on the North Shore in Mandeville and Covington. I also work with clients in Baton Rouge, along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and nationwide.

Most advisors plan from a big hub, where a nonstop to almost anywhere is a given. From New Orleans, how you get there shapes the whole trip. I fly these routes myself, so I plan them the way I would for my own week off.

What MSY flies internationally

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is a strong regional airport, not a major hub. That's worth knowing before you plan anything long-haul.

  • British Airways nonstop to London Heathrow. It's MSY's only nonstop to Europe, about 8½ hours on a Boeing 787. I've flown it twice, both times booked with American Airlines AAdvantage miles, flying out to Austria and home from Switzerland.
  • Toronto on Air Canada, with onward connections across Canada and beyond.
  • Cancún, which makes Mexico's Caribbean coast an easy long weekend.
  • Nonstops to the big hubs, including Washington Dulles, Dallas–Fort Worth and Atlanta. These are the real gateways to Africa, Asia and most of Europe.

International routes out of MSY have come and gone over the years, so I check current schedules for every trip rather than relying on last year's map.

The Gateway Method: how I route trips from a non-hub airport

I don't start with the destination and accept whatever connection comes up. I start by choosing one of four gateways, then build the trip outward from it.

Gateway 1London Heathrow

British Airways nonstop from MSY, bookable with AAdvantage miles. Best for Europe: I've connected from London to Vienna, and it's a natural first-night stop before going further.

Gateway 2Washington Dulles

One nonstop hop from MSY with strong long-haul options. My route to Kenya by way of Amsterdam, and to Morocco and Switzerland by way of Paris. Also my way home from Austria by way of Zurich.

Gateway 3Dallas–Fort Worth

An American Airlines hub a short flight away. My starting point for Japan, with an overnight to break up the journey.

Gateway 4Houston (IAH)

Worth the extra step when a nonstop saves a full connection. I flew Qatar Airways business class nonstop from Houston to Doha, then on to India.

Routes I've flown myself

DestinationHow I routed itWhy it worked
Kenya safariMSY → Washington Dulles → Amsterdam → NairobiOne easy nonstop hop to Dulles, then KLM through Amsterdam to Nairobi in business class, booked with Air France–KLM Flying Blue miles.
MoroccoMSY → Washington Dulles → Paris → MarrakechDulles to Paris for the ocean crossing, then a short hop into Marrakech.
JapanMSY → Dallas (overnight) → San Diego → Tokyo NaritaAn overnight in Dallas meant starting the long-haul rested. Dallas to Tokyo was business class, booked with AAdvantage miles: a West Coast departure most people wouldn't think of, and a 20-hour Seoul layover at Four Seasons Seoul later in the trip.
AustriaOut: MSY → London → Vienna
Home: Vienna → Zurich → Washington Dulles → MSY
Three loyalty programs, one trip. The British Airways nonstop to London on AAdvantage miles, then London to Vienna in business class on British Airways Avios. Home on Swiss in business class through Zurich, booked with Aeroplan points.
SwitzerlandOut: MSY → Washington Dulles → Paris → Zurich
Home: Milan → London → MSY
Air France business class through Paris, booked with Flying Blue points. Home from Milan on British Airways, connecting in London to the MSY nonstop, booked with AAdvantage miles.
India & Abu DhabiOut: Houston → Doha → New Delhi
Then: New Delhi → Doha → Abu Dhabi
Home: Doha → Houston
Every flight was Qatar Airways business class, all booked with Avios. The Houston nonstop to Doha made it worth leaving from IAH, and Doha connected India and Abu Dhabi in one trip.

The rules I plan by

  • Protect the arrival. A buffer night goes in before anything that can't move: a safari bush flight, a cruise embarkation, a special dinner.
  • Make the layover part of the trip. A long connection can be a night somewhere wonderful rather than hours in a terminal.
  • Fewer, longer stays. Two or three bases over ten or eleven nights means less time in transit and more time actually there.
  • Fly long-haul in business class on points. I book most of my own international flights with miles, in business class, using AAdvantage, Avios, Air France–KLM Flying Blue and Aeroplan. The right program often decides the gateway, so I plan the routing and the award together.

Points as a discovery engine

Searching for award seats does more than save money. It shows you routings you'd never find on a regular booking site. Japan through San Diego, Kenya through Amsterdam, Switzerland through Paris, India through Doha, and Austria home through Zurich all came from searching where business class seats were actually available, then building the trip around them.

From a non-hub airport like MSY, that flexibility matters even more. Often the best route to a destination isn't the obvious one. It's the one the right points program opens up.

My favorite programs for business class awards

AeroplanAir Canada

Great for Star Alliance business class. I flew Swiss business class home from Vienna through Zurich on Aeroplan points.

AAdvantageAmerican Airlines

Books the British Airways nonstop from MSY to London, plus oneworld partners. I used it for London and for business class to Tokyo.

Flying BlueAir France & KLM

My go-to for Air France and KLM business class. It took me to Nairobi through Amsterdam and to Zurich through Paris.

AviosBritish Airways & Qatar Airways

My pick for Qatar Airways business class. I flew Houston to Doha, New Delhi and Abu Dhabi and back entirely in Qatar business class on Avios. I also used Avios for London to Vienna.

Award flight booking

Want to fly business class on points too?

I offer award flight booking as a separate service. I'll find the routing and the program that make your points or miles go furthest, then book it with you. The fee is $150.

A physician's approach to trip design

I work one week on and one week off as a hospitalist, so I plan around real blocks of time off. The goal is to come back to your first shift or first meeting rested, not recovering from your vacation.

  • Pacing: a gentle first day, sensible flight direction and a buffer day before you're back at work.
  • Contingency planning: thinking ahead about remote locations, medical evacuation coverage and travelling with medications.
  • Built for busy professionals: physicians, healthcare professionals and executives across the New Orleans area who want their time off to count.

This is trip design, not medical advice. It's the same discernment I bring to patient care, applied to how you travel.

When New Orleanians travel

  • Escaping summer heat and hurricane season: cooler places like Alaska, the Alps, Iceland and Japan. See my ocean and expedition journeys.
  • Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest: I'll help you decide whether to leave town or stay, and plan around the calendar either way.
  • The holidays: Christmas markets, snowy cities and festive grand hotels, like Quebec City's Fairmont Le Château Frontenac.

Where my clients go from MSY

What working with me gets you

Through my affiliation with Fora Travel, I have access to Virtuoso, Hyatt Privé, Marriott Luminous, Accor Héra and Four Seasons Preferred Partner. That means real benefits at partner properties, not just a reservation. Planning fees start at $250, and award flight booking with your points or miles is $150. See how I work.

Questions I hear most

Do I need to live in New Orleans to work with you?

No. I'm based in Metairie and work with travelers across the New Orleans area, Louisiana and nationwide. Local clients benefit from my firsthand knowledge of routing out of MSY.

Is it worth flying out of MSY, or should I drive to Houston?

Usually fly from MSY. After a five-hour drive and airport parking, a one-stop itinerary through Washington Dulles, Dallas or London is often easier. Houston wins when its nonstop saves a full connection. I left from IAH for Qatar Airways business class nonstop to Doha, on my way to India and Abu Dhabi.

What's the best way to get from New Orleans to Europe?

For most of Europe, the British Airways nonstop from MSY to London Heathrow is the simplest start. You can connect onward or spend a night in London first. Washington Dulles is my second gateway, especially for Paris and North Africa.

How do you plan trips around a physician's schedule?

I start from your actual time-off block and work backward: arrival buffer, pacing and a recovery day before you return. I work an alternating-week schedule myself.

What does it cost to work with you?

Planning fees start at $250. Hotel and cruise commissions are paid by the travel suppliers at no additional cost to you.

Can you book flights with my points or miles?

Yes. Award flight booking is a separate service with a $150 fee. I find the routing and the loyalty program that make your points go furthest, including business class on long-haul routes out of New Orleans.
